Memorial Timeline

June 2009
Representatives of the Campbell Memorial Association contact Jeff Schnabel, Portland State University Department of Architecture Professor, to propose an architectural design competition for its proposed new firefighters’ memorial.  A new partnership between Portland State University, the Campbell Memorial Association and Portland Fire & Rescue is forged.

July 2009
Schnabel invites 12 adjunct faculty to participate in the Campbell Memorial Design Competition.  Seven architects take up the challenge.  Of the seven, five are principals in local design firms and the other two serve chief roles in their firms.  Entrants tour the proposed memorial location (at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge).

September 2009
Deadline for Campbell Memorial Design Competition submittals.

October 2009
Designs are unveiled at a reception on October 19, 2009, where the public is invited to comment on the Phase One designs.  Over 200 feedback cards are received at the event.  Selection Committee meets on October 26, 2009 to review the feedback received, and narrow the field down to the top three designs.  Top three designs are displayed at City Hall for further public review and comment from October 26 – 30, 2009.

November 2009
Phase Two begins. The Selection Committee meets on November 30, 2009 with the three finalists; finalists have the option to leave their designs as they are or further revise them and submit revisions to the Selection Committee by January 15, 2010.

January 2010
Final design selection will take place in late January.

January 2011 (proposed)
Construction on the new Campbell Memorial begins.

June 26, 2011 (proposed)
Construction is complete and a celebration is held to dedicate the Campbell Memorial on the 100th Anniversary of Chief Campbell’s death.

Competition Entrants

The Campbell Memorial Design Competition included seven architects or architectural teams.  Of the seven entrants, five are principals in local design firms and the other two serve chief roles in their firms.  Entrants are adjunct faculty of Portland State University’s Department of Architecture and typically teach one to two classes per term.

Phase One: Results

After reviewing the conceptual designs submitted by the seven participants, the Selection Committee selected these three designs to advance to Phase Two (in no particular order):

Phase Two: Final Designs and Winner Selection

The three finalists selected to continue have approximately one month to leave their designs as they are, or revise their designs and present them to the Selection Committee by January 15, 2010.  In late January 2010, the winner will be selected by the Selection Committee.

 

Memorial Vision
