SUM Design Studio is a group of four individuals with a combined 50 years of experience who are inspired to practice their skills in the context of something greater than themselves. Together, they design meaningful and sustainable buildings, environments and personal spaces for people with careful consideration for community, continuity, quality and context. They provide experience in planning, industrial, renovation, corporate office, primary and secondary schools, commercial, government, hospitality, and multifamily housing.
SUM’s business model is distinctive. Having contributed at firms rooted in hierarchy and formalities, the team recognized advantages to creating a dynamic structure. They designed a flexible and fluid infrastructure which enables them to appoint the strongest team members possible for each unique project. A thoughtful combination of architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects and specialty consultants are chosen to lend their skills and perspective in the way that most benefits the client. The formula allows for a holistic approach to problem-solving, while capitalizing on the skills of specialists. This team structure also includes our client partners. Client partners are an integral part of our process through all stages of the design and documentation.
Our business model includes both design and development. Because we are frequently the client on projects, we have a deep understanding of owner’s interests and concerns. We use that understanding to inform our entire decision making. Every Project begins with a conversation.
